As I listen to the inaugural speech of President Joe Biden, I am reminded of the battles this country and its people have faced. From slavery and civil wars to foreign and domestic acts of terrorism, our nation has known fear, pain, and shame. President Biden's call for unity fills me both with hope and sadness. Most of my thoughts, however, are focused on the executive order that will be signed today freeing children locked away in cages and reuniting them with their families. I cannot wait to hear confirmation that it is finally done, possibly watch videos of reunion, and cry with relief and grief.

I remember attending a small, peaceful protest a few years ago when this separation of children and parents became headline news. I will not say "when this began" because our nation and many nations around the world have awful histories of separation. This is sadly just another incident to add to the list. I remember an elderly, white man driving by in his car and flipping off the protesters. I've thought of him often since then. I've wondered what his life has been like and what moments led to that decision. Was he upset about all protests or just ours? What fears led to this anger?
Americans are blessed with the freedom to think, feel, and pray in whatever way they choose. I specifically do not include "say" in this list despite the "freedom of speech" allowed in the first amendment to the constitution. I do not believe this freedom extends to speaking treason and deception as evidenced by laws against sedition and purgery. Nevertheless, we have the freedom to speak out against bigotry, oppression, and government. While I might not agree with what everyone chooses to say, I am glad that people are using that freedom to try to right wrongs.
On this inauguration day, I think of the freedoms we are given and the oppression others must still endure. I hope that President Biden's vision for unity comes to fruition and ALL people can finally enjoy what many of us are privileged to expect.
